Advanced Diploma in Music Production and Audio Engineering

THE PROGRAMME

Advanced Diploma in Music Production and Audio Engineering aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and proficiencies to develop their artistic concept, their musical products and to arm students with adequate proficiencies in business and marketing in order to promote their music to a wider audience. The Advanced Diploma in Music Production will culminate in a regional/international TOUR in which students will actually have to go on TOUR in which they will apply all knowledge and skills learnt from the programme. The average teacher-to-student ratio is 1:12.

Artiste & Product Development

Synopsis:

This module introduces students to the field of A&R (Artist and Repertoire), which emphasizes the development of the overall artist concept and development of the product i.e. the music, the repertoire and the live show.

Objectives:

The objective of this module is to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills for the visual and musical development of the artist as a complete package, to equip students with the ability to effectively develop a musical repertoire that is congruent with the artistic image.

Entry Requirements

For Singaporeans:

  1. Diploma in Music Production and Audio Engineering or equivalent polytechnic diploma is related field or equivalent.
  2. Sufficient Portfolio
  3. Minimum 16 years of age.
  4. A pass in 3 subjects (inclusive of English) at ‘O’ Level or equivalent.
  5. Minimum of Grade 5 Music Theory from ABRSM/TRINITY/LCM/ROCKSCHOOL. Student without these listed qualifications can take a Music Theory Placement Test set by the school. Candidate who do not pass the placement test can take the Harmony 1 module as a bridging course.
  6. Interview and Audition by Course Manager to establish instrument proficiency and suitability.

Applicant with substantial industry practice will be interviewed and attended on a case by case basis.

For International Students:

  1. Minimum 16 years of age.
  2. 3 GCE ‘O’ Level passes grade A to C or grade 1 to 6 in English and two other subjects.
  3. International applicants who have completed at least 10 years of education may be considered for application. Relevant supporting evidence of applicants’ achievements in the arts must be submitted with the application.
  4. Equivalent English qualifications include internet-based TOEFL (score of 75 and above), and IELTS (overall score of 5.0 and above).
  5. For applicants who do not meet requirement 2), a placement test is administered before an applicant can be enrolled into this course. Entry into the course is dependent on results of the placement test.

Rizal Hefni

Rizal Hefni

Course Manager, Music Faculty

Rizal has recorded some of Malaysia’s top acts such as Nitrous, 6ixth Sense, Fabulous Cats, Seven and Serina Redzuan. He studied under Grammy­nominated Engineer Eduardo Andres Garcia during his stint at the International College of Music and later worked as a recording engineer at RMP Studio where he studied under world­class musicians Frederiq Ries and Dave Andrews.

Bachelor Degree in Audio Engineering and Music Production, JMC Academy

Vinod has been an avid music performer since young, later branching out and specialising in audio engineering. He developed a keen interest in the recording arts and obtained his degree in Audio Engineering and Music Production from JMC Academy in Melbourne, Australia. His skills led him to work on the Sound Design and Mixing of a short film called “Fixed” which became the official selections of Film Festivals in Melbourne, Iran and Mexico. It was also accepted by the 18th Bicycle Film Festival in New York. Not only restricting himself to the recording aspect of music, his passion for performance and music brought him most recently to Brisbane, Australia to play at the Dead of Winter Festival 2019 as well as being able to open for Multi Major award winner HariHaran, when he came to Singapore mid 2019. Other international acts he has opened for include: Immolation (NYC), Venom Inc (UK), The Exploited (UK).

Rufus Varghese

As an esteemed Audio Director, Rufus has been credited innumerably for having recorded and produced music for film, Mediacorp television & Radio, computer games, theatre, interactive media and various independent artistes. He has been featured in Channel News Asia and Sconicscoop, for his major involvement with Lion Studios. Mentored by the late British Engineer John Herbert in the art and science of Studio Production, Rufus is regarded for his teaching and supervisory abilities. He graduated with 1st Class Honors in Audio Production from the School of Audio Engineering and his research interests are in the areas of sound synthesis/analysis/control/simulation, spectral analysis, small/large environment control room acoustics, audio quality/degradation, multichannel recording/mixing and mastering.

Damien Ng

Damien Ng

BA (Hons) in Recording Arts, Middlesex University

Having almost two decades of industry experience, Damien specializes in Location Sound Recording, Mixing Audio for Post Production, Sound Design, Music Composition, and Audio Restoration. He's a passionate guitarist and is well-versed with Waves Sound Design Suite Plugins and Positive Grid Bias Desktop Guitar Amp Emulation. His recent works include recording audio on set, mixing audio and producing sound design for video for Dramas and TVC corporate videos.

Reuben Sim

Specialising in music production, Reuben has produced various acts over the past 3 years, including The Reckless Skies, a pop-punk band in which he is also on vocals and guitar. He is proficient in audio engineering and recording techniques while also well-versed in composing and arranging. Since 2016, his passion for music has led him to being both an assistant music producer at homegrown production house United Records and a music director in his church.

Alex (DJ Alx) is a Music Producer, Musician and Sound Engineer who hails from Portugal and is currently based in Singapore. He graduated from Instituto Superior de Línguas e Administração with a Bachelor's Degree in English/French Translation and has spent the last 20 years honing his music craft. He is, we are proud to say, also a recent graduate of Orita Sinclair's Diploma in Music Production and Audio Engineering. Alex recently had his collaboration with Masia One featured on Netflix Altered Carbon Season 2 OST and also composed the Ti Tou Tao (Mediacorp Channel 5 series) theme song alongside Masia One. He is the music curator for Suka Suka Sundays, and resident DJ in Sub City, Lion City Bass, Kampong Boogie and Ginga! where he invites DJ’s from Singapore and abroad to share the booth with him at White Label Records. As a musician, Alex was part of Macaco do Chinês (guitarist/singer/producer), a band that were pioneers in crossing Hip-Hop, Dubstep and Grime with Portuguese traditional music. He released two critically acclaimed albums and a mixtape. Macacos do Chinês toured both nationally and internationally, playing in headline festivals like Rock In Rio and starred in MTV’s Brand New TV concerts. As a DnB producer he has been working closely and producing for Skalator Music, one of the most refreshing labels coming out of Portugal. His debut single at the end of last year, Babylon Man, got 4/5 in DJ MAG UK.

Chong Yu Lun and Rachel Toh co-founded Butterworks, a production house, and have acquired more than 10 filmmaking awards through their filmmaking journey. Their short film "Dao Sha Pia" was shared by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Most notably, they built a renowned Youtube channel, Butterworks which has gathered over 270,000 subscribers and over 35 million views.The duo, director and executive producer, are often known for producing heartfelt, tear-jerking video content that connects, relates and touches hearts. Their knowledge for creating compelling content has even brought viral success to the branding videos they produced for notable corporate clients such as SMRT, hauling over 900,000 views.

Lor Hui Yun has more than 6 years of filming and photography experience. She has a keen interest in creating music videos and has worked with singers globally. She graduated in 2015 from Goldsmiths College with a honours degree in film.

Jason Chong

Starting his musical journey at the age of 14, his keen learning abilities has allowed him to teach himself instruments like the guitar, drums, keyboards and bass. He was awarded a scholarship by the Media Development Authority of Singapore in 2010 to pursue a Bachelor’s in Creative Technology, majoring in Audio Engineering & Sound Production at JMC Academy in Melbourne, Australia. He has also arranged and produced for regional artists like Amuyi (Taiwan), Ferlyn G (Singapore), Mornin Chen (Taiwan), BBF (China), JPGirls (Vietnam) and many more. In 2016 he co-wrote and produced the song《為夢想閃耀》alongside veteran Mandopop singer Derrick Hoh 何維健 as a theme song for the drama ‘The Dream Coders《夢想程式》’which was aired on Mediacorp’s Channel 8 in February 2017 and has been nominated for the Best Theme Song for the Star Awards 2018.

Ken Chong

Ken Chong is a multi-award winning composer, and owner of Sound Designers, a music scoring and audio post production firm. His accolades include “Best Original Music Score” at the 2008 Phoenix Awards and the grand prize winner of the FM 100.3 “My Production” Local Music Writing Competition 1999, for the song, ‘You Are Trash’.
